Yes. On average, women in Canada spend between 0.30$ and 1.50$ per menstrual pad. A pack of pads in northern and remote communities can cost upwards of $30.
This means we are spending on average about 240$ give or take, per year, managing our menstrual cycles. EVERY year. Wearing re-useable cotton pads can reduce your spending, or altogether eliminate purchasing period products. A recent study has found that one in four menstruating women in Canada have had to choose between paying for period products or other essentials such as food or rent. Once you own a supply of re-useable products you will feel better not giving your money away to big corporations who care more about revenue than women's health, comfort and the environment.
While this varies from user to user, we can recommend you calculate your needs based on one pad per 8 hours. Because Cleopatra Pads are made from cotton and wool only, they dry relatively fast when rinsed and wrung out firmly. We have found that a stash of 8-10 pads is a sufficient number for the average woman, but do remember that even using cotton pads part-time is still making a difference.
They certainly can. With proper fitting underwear, your cotton and wool menstrual pad can be trusted to protect you against leaks, while providing a comfortable and eco-friendly period experience. Wool is one of nature's finest materials, in terms of absorbency and durability. Our pads have been tested while engaging in activities such as horseback riding and cycling and have proven to be a trustworthy choice for women and girls of all ages and sizes.
Oh yes. Once you try a cotton pad you will realize right away the difference in how it feels versus a disposable one. Cotton pads are soft and breathable, and the wool layer is encased in two layers of flannel so there is no irritation, itchiness or mess when you are changing. You can even use the clean section of your pad to wipe yourself before putting on a new one, then toss it directly into a soak pail or a wet bag to rinse and wash later if you are away from home. Although you may feel self-conscious about them at first because of the difference in bulk, we guarantee that wearing them will be your own cozy little secret.
Our cotton pads and pantiliners are fully machine washable and can be dried in a regular clothes dryer, however this exposure to high heat and tumbling may reduce the lifespan of your pads. Wool and cotton pads are hand-wash only (though i know some people are going to put them in a washer) to prevent the wool inside from bunching and shifting. If you experience this after *accidentally* putting one in your machine, it can easily be straightened back into shape by hand. We have found that hand washing also produces the best results for ensuring your pads come nice and clean. If you need a clean pad in a hurry, you can wash out your pad, wring it until almost dry and roll it in a towel and squeeze to remove any remaining dampness.
